“During the course of our 50 year long career in cancer research one thing has become very clear and it is this. Bright young minds are needed to steer future research to make continual improvements to the treatments that already exist and to discover new ones that haven’t been invented yet. We at Leukaemia Busters have supported and trained many young scientists and doctors in the charity’s Simon Flavell Leukaemia Research Laboratories at Southampton General Hospital, understanding that they are the means by which successful research will continue into the future. Over the years Leukaemia Busters has provided the support for this and some of our past students have made important research contributions and they themselves have become leaders in the fields of paediatric and adult oncology. It is for this reason that we are now steering Leukaemia Busters towards providing prestigious three year Simon Flavell Leukaemia Research Fellowships, designed for young scientists who have recently completed their PhD qualification. The research fellow will carry out laboratory based work on the immunotherapy of leukaemia in the expectation that this will provide a springboard for them to become lead researchers in the future to continue the all important quest of a safe and effective cure for each and every patient with leukaemia”.
Quote from: Drs David & Bee Flavell, co-Scientific Directors and co-founders of Leukaemia Busters
Medical research is impossible without the skills, intellect and know-how of dedicated scientists and physicians, many who devote their entire lives to the quest of discovering new improved treatments for patients. It is for this reason that Leukaemia Busters have gone into partnership with another well respected charity, Children with Cancer UK . The two charities have together taken the strategic decision to create early career research fellowships to support recent postdoctoral graduates to conduct a three year research project on the immunotherapy of leukaemia. The expectation is that the fellow will not only deliver potentially life saving research results during their tenure but it will also provide them with the opportunity to make their mark enabling them to become an independent researcher who remain and continue to make contributions to this field of research for many years into the future.
Former Leukaemia Busters PhD student Dr Harrison Wensley obtained his PhD qualification from the University of Southampton in 2020 following training and research conducted in the charity’s Simon Flavell Leukaemia Research Labs.
