Our Laboratory Research

At the heart of Leukaemia Busters life saving research since 1991 has been the Simon Flavell Leukaemia Research Laboratory. Based at Southampton General Hospital, the charity’s flagship laboratory was instrumental in our discovery and translational research strategy from the very beginning. From there our research scientists made important discoveries, some of which are now proving of importance as immunotherapies begin to make their way into mainstream medicine.

Through carefully controlled experimental studies our scientists were amongst the first in the world to prove that certain combinations of antibody-based drugs were more effective than individual ones and to demonstrate that the patient’s own immune system worked in conjunction to reinforce the potency of some of the antibody-based drugs that we had developed.

Another important aspect of our laboratory-based work has been the training of young up and coming doctors and scientists working to gain their MD or PhD qualifications from the University of Southampton. Over the years many young aspiring scientists have been able to pursue a Leukaemia Busters funded research project in our own laboratories under the supervision and guidance of our senior scientists. Some of our past students have themselves become leading lights in both paediatric and adult oncology. We at Leukaemia Busters consider the training of young doctors and scientists to become the lead researchers of the future is of vital importance in ensuring a supply of the best minds to continue
