“Immunotherapies work by harnessing the power of the patients own immune system using antibodies or killer immune cells to treat the patients cancer. Unlike conventional chemotherapy, immunotherapies target only the cancer cells leaving normal cells in the patients body unharmed and are therefore in principle and in practice safer and better tolerated by the patient. Immunotherapies have been highly successful for many patients with childhood and adult acute leukaemia though not every patient responds. It is our job now to develop and refine these new treatments further so that they are of benefit for as many patients as possible. This is Leukaemia Busters’ important mission.”
